Cllr. Bornor M. Varmah, the Secretary General of the Liberia National Bar Association (LNBA), has been elected vice president of the West African Bar Association (WABA). Cllr. Varmah was unanimously chosen by lawyers after WABA’s Annual Conference in Cotonou, Benin, held from June 26 to 27.

Ousmane Bouba Traore of the Malian Bar Association and Adesina Adegbite of the Nigerian Bar Association were elected President and Secretary General, respectively. Those three have been charged with the responsibility to lead WABA for a two-year term.

The conference, sponsored by the United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS), brought together legal professionals from Francophone, Anglophone, and Lusophone countries.

According to an LNBA release, WABA’s membership agreed at the end of the conference to ensure a democratic and peaceful society free from tension and conflict.

The lawyers reached the commitment after hours of exchanges of views on a variety of subjects, including the role of the lawyers and an organization.

WABA’s membership pledged to promote a democratic and peaceful society, free from tensions and conflicts, in line with discussions held during the conference.

Established in 2004, WABA aims to address human rights violations and other challenges that threaten the rule of law, fostering democratic governance, peace, and development in the region. The association seeks to mobilize Bar Associations and legal practitioners to actively contribute to these objectives.
