Police Inspector General Gregory Coleman has condemned the unethical actions of highway patrol officers caught extorting bribes from drivers on the highway, calling their behavior a direct violation of the core values of the Liberia National Police (LNP).
In a statement shared on social media on Friday, January 18, Coleman expressed his dismay at the incident, which he witnessed firsthand. “This afternoon, while traveling from Nimba, I witnessed something deeply concerning. Some highway patrol officers were harassing drivers and soliciting bribes. Such behavior undermines the core values of our police force,” Coleman said.
The Inspector General disclosed that the implicated officers have been turned over to the Professional Standards Division for further investigation and disciplinary measures. “These officers will face appropriate consequences for their actions. This reflects our commitment to maintaining high ethical standards and ensuring accountability within the LNP,” he stated.
Reassuring the public, Coleman emphasized the LNP’s dedication to integrity and professionalism. “What truly matters is our unwavering commitment to honesty, professionalism, and respect for the rule of law. We are determined to restore public trust in the Liberia National Police,” he added.
The police chief also issued a stern reminder to all officers about their duty to serve with honor. “Every officer must remember that we serve to protect and uphold the law, not to exploit those we are tasked to safeguard. Actions like these will not be tolerated,” he warned.
