Medica Liberia Leads SGBV and Trauma Training in Sinoe County – Global News Network Liberia

by lnn

Medica Liberia conducted an intensive two-day training on November 28, 2024, focusing on Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) and trauma in Sinoe County. The training brought together key stakeholders, including community leaders, local organizations, health workers, educators, law enforcement officials, and youth leaders. The initiative aimed to address the increasing cases of SGBV and the long-term psychological impact on survivors, emphasizing the need for collective action to combat this pressing issue.

During the sessions, facilitators, including Miltona E.W. Yeaney, a Reproductive Health Counselor, stressed the importance of preventing SGBV and supporting victims. Madam Yeaney elaborated on the psychological, emotional, and social trauma often faced by survivors, highlighting the urgent need for safe spaces where victims can report cases without fear of judgment. Participants were also informed about the legal and medical services available within Sinoe County to support survivors in their recovery journey.

The training sessions encouraged open discussions, allowing participants to share experiences and propose solutions. One major focus was on equipping participants with tools to advocate for justice and rehabilitation in their respective communities. Madam Yeaney called for everyone present to serve as champions in spreading awareness and breaking the cycle of silence surrounding SGBV.

Speaking during the event, a participant, Marcus Gonoe, expressed gratitude for the training, stating that it empowered him and others to become agents of change. He emphasized the need to raise awareness in their neighborhoods and provide support to survivors. Many participants echoed similar sentiments, pledging to take active roles in creating safer communities for all.

The organizers of the training reaffirmed their commitment to sustaining similar initiatives and called on the government and international partners to provide increased funding and resources. They emphasized that fighting SGBV and addressing trauma should, not only be in Sinoe County but across Liberia, to ensure a better and safer future for all.
