The Ministry of Transport (MOT), in partnership with the National Road Fund (NRF), has officially launched an Axle Load Control implementation and awareness campaign aimed at safeguarding Liberia’s road infrastructure and promoting road safety across the country.

This initiative, highlighted during a signing ceremony between the MOT and WIDRA Liberia on Monday, December 16th in Sinkor, focuses on educating drivers about the dangers of overloading vehicles.

Speaking at the event, Minister of Transport Sirleaf Ralph Tyler stressed the urgent need for drivers to understand the severe consequences of overloaded vehicles.

Minister Tyler explained that such vehicles cause undue wear and tear on Liberia’s roads, bridges, and other vital infrastructure, leading to expensive repairs and maintenance. He also noted that overloading compromises vehicle handling and braking systems, significantly raising the risk of accidents and putting road users in danger.

“The project is designed to ensure that drivers comply with weight limits and Axle Load Law and Regulations to promote safe and efficient transportation. By properly distributing weight and adhering to regulations, drivers can help preserve the integrity of our roads and ensure public safety,” Minister Tyler said.

He added that Axle Load Control serves not only to mitigate road safety risks but also to reduce the economic burden caused by accident-related damage and emergency repairs.

Minister Tyler emphasized that properly maintained roads are key to reducing vehicle operating costs, improving logistics efficiency, and facilitating trade, which in turn boosts economic activity and increases tax revenue. Part of the additional revenue will go toward supporting the National Road Fund, enabling further infrastructure development.

“The importance of Axle Load Control cannot be overstated,” Tyler remarked. “It ensures that our infrastructure remains reliable, supports sustained economic activities, and helps optimize the funds for further development.”

The Manager of the National Road Fund, Joseta Neufville-Wento, echoed these sentiments, highlighting the vital role of Axle Load Control in preserving Liberia’s road infrastructure.

According to Neufville-Wento, overloaded vehicles are a major cause of premature deterioration of road surfaces and bridges, which then leads to higher maintenance costs and a reduced lifespan for the infrastructure.

“Axle Load Control ensures compliance with weight regulations, which reduces damage to the roads and ultimately lowers maintenance costs,” Neufville-Wento said. “This proactive approach extends the lifespan of our road infrastructure and allows us to redirect funds toward critical development projects, such as road upgrades and new constructions.”

Neufville-Wento also emphasized that the system will generate additional revenue through fines imposed on vehicles exceeding weight limits. These fines will be reinvested into road maintenance and expansion projects, further benefiting Liberia’s transportation network.

“By ensuring proper monitoring and enforcement, we can reduce the damage caused by overloaded vehicles, improve the efficiency of our road maintenance system, and generate funds that will continue to improve Liberia’s roads,” she added.

Atty. Dave Dahn Diawoo Sr., Transport Consultant/Coordinator of the Ministry of Transport’s Technical Support Unit (TSU), called Axle Load Control a strategic initiative that contributes directly to the sustainability of the National Road Fund and Liberia’s overall economic growth. Diawoo pointed out that minimizing road damage and reducing maintenance costs is key to maximizing the effectiveness of the National Road Fund, which is responsible for financing road development across Liberia.

“Axle Load Control supports the overall economic development of Liberia by extending the lifespan of our road infrastructure and ensuring the responsible use of resources,” Diawoo explained. “It is vital not only for the sustainability and effective management of the National Road Fund but also for the continued prosperity of our nation.”

Diawoo also warned drivers of the serious penalties they could face for operating overweight vehicles, including fines that will contribute to Liberia’s road redevelopment efforts.

“Penalties will be imposed on drivers who fail to comply with weight limits,” he said. “These fines will be directed into the government’s revenue account, which will then be used for the redevelopment and maintenance of our roads.”

He concluded by urging all drivers to respect the regulations, drive responsibly, and support the government’s efforts to maintain safer and longer-lasting roads. “Together, we can ensure that Liberia’s road infrastructure is sustainable, safe, and reliable for generations to come.”
