The Daily Observer Nimba Bureau has observed that the entire local government structure of Nimba County is absent from the county, as officials have abandoned their official duties for the presidential tour of Lofa County where the festive season will be celebrated by the President. Back home, there is no clue whether there will be any local celebration, especially for the kids and the disabled.

The local government officials, including Supt. Kou Meapeh Gono, her three deputies as well as city mayors have been reportedly absent from their offices since the middle of last week and up to press time.

Neither the city in Nimba is yet to be decorated as it is usually done during every festive season, including Christmas, New Year and the Independence Day celebration.

There is also no sign of any donation of food items to the needy, including the hospital, disabled community and even those in the prison, which is customary in many Christmas festivals.

Although, there were still some sporadic works still ongoing up to Monday, December 23, 2024 by other junior staff in the county administrative offices, while most of the other offices were deserted, with some of the staff already  left for vacation.

“We are still working but we don’t know whether there is any planned occasion in the county to commemorate the Christmas,” said a lady, who worked in one of the county offices and asked not to be named.

“Some of our friends have already left for vacation,” she added.

In most of the past Christmas seasons, there can be some donations to charitable homes, hospitals and those living with vulnerability, but this year seems to be different, if any, then it is yet to be announced.

Unofficial information reaching the Daily Observer also suggests that President Boakai will commemorate the 60th anniversary of the four counties that got their counties status in 1964, Bong, Grand Gedeh, Lofa and Nimba, prompting the county authority to abandon their respective assignments.

It is not also clear whether all the local officials from the rest of the four counties also left or abandoned their assignment for the commemoration.

“As the year comes to a close, nothing much has been seen as major developments since the Unity Party led Government took power over 11 months ago and we expect some report from the superintendent or her proxy,” said some critics.

“The County Council controversy, which led to the reduction of the membership to 7, after the two civil society representatives redrew, the utilization of the projected county budget by the seven members and many other proposed initiatives are still on a standstill or yet to be published,” were some of the views from across the county.

“The superintendent spent a long time at the climate conference in Baku, Azerbaijan, we are yet to get any outcome of the trip and continue to be in and out,” one Prince, a youth activist wondered.

“We expected some year end reports, regarding some of her projects she had undertaken, including superintendent compound, the proceeds from the scrap deed and many more,’ he added.

Efforts to get the opinion from the county through the County Communication Officer, Mr. Amos Gbanah couldn’t materialize as his phone rang perpetually with no response.

However, no sign of any decorations of some of the major cities in Nimba, including Ganta and Sanniquellie up to press time, but some believed that decorations will be done on the last day.
