Obituary: Dr. Billy Clinton Johnson, A Brilliant Liberian Scientist, Medical Doctor, Author and Educator | Obituaries

The death is announced of Dr. Billy Clinton Johnson, a Senior consultant and former Chief Medical officer of the John F. Kennedy Medical Center, and a professor at the A M Dogliotti College of Medicine, University of Liberia.

This sad event occurred on Saturday, June 1, 2024 at the John F. Kennedy Medical Center, following a brief illness. His remains have been deposited at the Samuel Stryker Funeral Home in Sinkor.

Dr. Billy Clinton Johnson was born March 13, 1950 unto the union of Mr. and Mrs. Clinton Johnson.

He attained his primary and secondary education from the B.W. Harris Episcopal High School where he graduated with distinction.  Young Billy C. Johnson was a sociable and enthusiastic person that found himself in a circle of other enthusiastic young people, including Mr. Clemenceau Urey, with whom he developed a lifelong brotherly relationship. Upon completion from secondary school, young Billy C. Johnson matriculated at the Cuttington University where he obtained a Bachelor Degree in Biology with honors in 1973. He then traveled to the United States of America for advanced studies at the University of Florida in Gainesville, Fl. Having worked assiduously hard, he obtained a Master of Science Degree in Molecular biology/Microbiology in 1975 and Doctorate of Philosophy (Phd) in Molecular biology/Microbiology in 1978 at the same university. He then returned home briefly (1980-1981) and served as Associate Professor of Biochemistry at the A M Dogliotti College of Medicine, University of Liberia.

He traveled back to the United States and obtained a Doctor of Medicine (MD) from the University of Florida at Gainesville, in 1986.  In 1990, He began his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn New York, and obtained his Board Certification in the United States in 1992. He successfully practiced medicine in South Carolina, Connecticut, Virginia and other States in the United States for a period of time and then returned to his Motherland, Liberia, where he made a huge impact in improving the Healthcare delivery system of his country as exemplified in the positive transformational changes at the John F Kennedy Medical Center during his tenure as Chief Medical Officer (2010 – 2019). He treated his patients with compassion and a high standard of care.

He also served diligently as Professor and Chair of the Department of Microbiology at the A M Dogliotti School of Medicine. Billy worked on many projects, writing books, scientific articles, and was in a constant search for health products in order to treat metabolic diseases. Such projects manifested his brilliance in so many ways. 

He wrote professional books which are currently selling on Amazon (Prescription for Weight Loss and Optimum Health, and New Prescription for Childhood Obesity). Most recently, Billy was working on a concoction drink that would boost the immune system in managing many ailments.

He has several publications in internationally recognized scientific journals and did receive several academic awards and Fellowships, including but not limited to the following:

II. Episcopal Church Bishop’s Scholarship, Cuttington College (1969-1972)

III. Graduate Research Fellowship Award, AFGRAD, University of Florida (1973-1978)

V. Member of the American Medical Association (AMA)

VI. Member American Mycological Society & Biochemical Society of America

VII. Member American Red Cross Society

VII. Fellow of the Liberian College of physicians and surgeons

VIII. Fellow of the West African College of Surgeons

Billy’s contributions to the world of science were nothing short of extraordinary. His groundbreaking research and dedication to the medical field improved countless lives and inspired many young scientists to follow in his footsteps. His intellectual brilliance was matched only by his compassion and humility, making him a beloved figure among his colleagues and patients alike. 

However, it was Billy’s spiritual depth that truly set him apart. He saw his work as part of a larger divine plan, always guided by his faith in Jehova’’s wisdom. This faith gave him a profound sense of peace and purpose, allowing him to face challenges with resilience and grace. Billy believed that every moment of his life was a gift, and he lived it to the fullest, cherishing the beauty of everyday experiences and the joy of human connection.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Carolyn L. Johnson, a son, Michael Johnson and a daughter, Chevon Johnson, 2 grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and other relatives in Sierra Leone, Liberia and the USA.

The mortal remains of Dr. Johnson will be removed from Stryker Funeral Parlor on Saturday, June 29, 2024 at the precise hour of 8:30 a.m., taken to the Greater Refuge Cathedral in Congo Town for wake keeping from 9 a.m. – 10 a.m. Funeral Service will begin at 10:30 a.m., followed by interment at the Gate of Heaven Memorial Cemetery in Bentol City, Montserrado County.

His legacy of dedicated service and expertise will be deeply missed.
