Office of the First Lady Addresses Allegations of Unauthorized Solicitation of Funds: – Global News Network Liberia

Monrovia, Liberia – January 20, 2025- The Office of the First Lady of the Republic of Liberia, Madam Kartumu Y. Boakai, wishes to address recent reports circulating in the media regarding a scholarship scheme for 40 Liberians to attend universities in Great Britain. According to media information, it was alleged that two staff members in the First Lady’s office, Mr. Varfee Holmes and Mr. Lemuel Vah, solicited and received the sum of US$4,000 from a Liberian parent with the promise of securing scholarships for his two children.

This matter has drawn significant public attention, and Madam Kartumu Boakai takes these allegations very seriously. After conducting a careful review of the situation and assessing the available evidence, Madam Boakai has taken the following decisive actions:

Immediate Suspension: The two individuals involved, Mr. Varfee Holmes and Mr.Lemuel Vah, have been suspended from their duties for one month without pay.

Refund of Funds:  Both individuals involved have refunded the total sum of US$4,000 to the affected party.

Stern Warning: Madam Boakai has issued a firm directive to all members of her staff, emphasizing the need to uphold the highest standards of integrity and professionalism. She has reiterated that the Office of the First Lady must reflect the dignity and sanctity befitting its role in service to the people of Liberia.
