— Acting Commerce Minister urges MSMEs

Liberia’s Deputy Commerce Minister for Administration then Acting Minister, Scholastica T. Nyenkan-Nimley, has called on Liberia’s micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) to transform their ideas into concrete initiatives, urging a focus on action-driven growth during the recently revived annual MSME conference.

Speaking at the closing ceremony of the conference, which returned after a six-year hiatus, Madam Nyenkan-Nimley emphasized the need to move beyond conceptual discussions. “Our vision must not remain just in our heads,” she said. “We expect to progress from one level to another, translating what we’ve learned into tangible actions that foster growth and development.”

The MSME conference, which originally began in 2013 but had been dormant since 2017, brought together entrepreneurs, stakeholders, and government officials to discuss pressing issues affecting small businesses and explore avenues for economic transformation. This year’s theme focuses on innovation, youth engagement, environmental protection, and productivity in agriculture and tourism.

Reflecting on the quick planning process, the Acting Minister acknowledged the challenges faced in organizing the event. “Some of us were optimistic, while others were pessimistic,” she admitted. “However, I consistently reassured my colleagues that it would work out, and indeed, this conference has proven to be a success.”

The three-day event included insightful panel discussions, product exhibitions, and awards for outstanding entrepreneurs, culminating in an evening of celebration. Acting Minister Nyenkan-Nimley expressed her hope that participants would leave the conference with renewed determination to implement their business visions.

“Our focus is on eradicating poverty and inequality through strategic initiatives. We want to see the ideas discussed here turned into realities that positively impact communities,” she said. “Next year, I look forward to hearing success stories from participants who have grown from micro to small and even medium enterprises.”

Deputy Minister of Small Business Administration, Kennedy Mulbah, also spoke during the closing ceremony, celebrating the successful revival of the conference. “This is just the start of many more to come,” he said, announcing plans for a larger and more impactful event in November next year.

Mulbah commended the efforts of all stakeholders, including the media, for ensuring the conference’s success. “The engagement over the past three days has been incredible, and I’m optimistic about the future of MSMEs in Liberia,” he added.

As the conference wrapped up, Madam Nyenkan-Nimley urged participants to celebrate their collective achievements and embrace the opportunities ahead. “We only came here to celebrate,” she said with enthusiasm. “Let us enjoy food, drink, and dance together as we mark this momentous occasion.”

At the just-ended MSME Conference and Trade Fair, organized by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry and partners, 15 Liberian-owned businesses benefited cash and other prizes. The Ministry of Commerce and Industry and partners provided the cash and other non-cash prizes to innovative and high-performing businesses that participated.

The MSME conference highlighted the resilience and innovation of Liberia’s small business sector, with participants inspired to drive economic growth and foster sustainable development in the years ahead.
