The interim management of the Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC) has announced plans to install prepaid electricity meters in all government ministries, commissions, bureaus, authorities, and agencies beginning next month. This move aims to ensure that government institutions begin paying for their electricity consumption, a measure deemed critical for LEC’s financial sustainability.
Thomas Gonkerwon, Interim Managing Director of the LEC, disclosed this during a recent presentation of the corporation’s expansion plans at the Mount Coffee Hydro Power Plant in White Plains, Montserrado County. The event, attended by a high-level delegation from the World Bank, highlighted LEC’s strategies to boost electricity supply and income generation.
“The introduction of prepaid meters for government institutions is a necessary step to strengthen LEC’s financial base,” Gonkerwon said. “This will enable us to address many of the challenges we face and expand our services to rural Liberia.”
Gonkerwon also announced plans to establish LEC offices in all 73 districts across Liberia, starting with five key regions, including Kakata, Roberts field, Bushrod Island, and Buchanan. “Expanding our footprint to these regions is essential for bringing reliable electricity services closer to the people,” he noted.
Ousmane Diagana, Vice President for Western and Central Africa at the World Bank, led the visiting delegation and expressed satisfaction with LEC’s achievements thus far. Diagana congratulated the corporation on its anniversary and reiterated the World Bank’s commitment to supporting LEC’s efforts.
“We are pleased with the progress made by the Liberia Electricity Corporation,” Diagana said. “The World Bank will continue to provide its fullest cooperation to ensure LEC’s success.”
Diagana emphasized the importance of extending electricity services to rural communities, stating, “Access to electricity is a fundamental need, and rural dwellers must not be left behind. The World Bank is committed to supporting LEC in making electricity accessible to all Liberians.”
The World Bank delegation toured several key LEC-operated facilities, including the Mount Coffee Hydro Power Plant and the CLSG Electrical Plant. These sites represent critical infrastructure supported by the World Bank to enhance Liberia’s energy capacity and reliability.
As the LEC implements these initiatives, including the rollout of prepaid metering and district-level expansion, it is expected to boost its revenue generation and strengthen the national electricity grid. The collaboration with international partners like the World Bank underscores the shared commitment to advancing Liberia’s energy sector and ensuring sustainable power access for all citizens.
