Nimba County District # 1 lawmaker, Rep. Samuel N. Brown has warned the citizens of Nimba, especially Ganta to desist from any behaviour that tantamount to undermining developments.
Speaking at the inauguration of Dekpah Commercial Complex in Ganta, Rep. Brown expressed his regret over the behaviour of storming the fire truck whenever it responded to a fire incident late by some citizens.
He explained it was purchased with a huge sum of money and it is up to the citizens to provide the security of the truck, instead of stoning it or attempting to destroy it.
“People used money to purchase the fire truck, so stop stoning it and I don’t think it is the fire truck that brought fire to your house,” he said.
Fire incidents have intensified in recent times, but before the fire truck can reach the incident spot, the fire had already razed and destroyed the property, leaving the citizens frustrated.
The only fire truck in Nimba is based in Sanniquellie City, where the fire station is also situated, making it harder for the truck to respond effectively to fire incidents.
Rep. Brown said a security mechanism will be put in placed to monitor the truck whenever it is responding to fire so as to track or arrest anyone who will be caught stoning the truck.
However, Rep. Brown had promised to bring in two additional fire trucks in Nimba, especially to enhance the fight against fire effectively or quickly.
He said the only delay in bringing in those trucks is the lack of a fire station in Ganta, something he promised to begin the construction as soon as possible.
Ganta had witnessed gruesome fire disasters in recent years, where in one incident four family members got killed and another incident, an Indian Dentist assigned at Ganta United Methodist hospital died.
Since October 2024, fire incidents have become alarming, where five shopping centers were consumed by fire, Justina Restaurant gutted by fire, but with help of the neighbors and the later arrival of the fire truck from Sanniquellie, the fire was put off.
On January 2, 2025, a five bedroom house gutted fire, leaving the entire house destroyed.
The cause of the fire is yet to be established, despite the intervention of fire service, but it is widely presumed the fire was caused by electricity, while others speculate that some criminal gangs were in the habit of setting houses on fire to allow them to seal.
Even though the allegation about criminals being behind the fire attack is yet to be confirmed from security.
