Monrovia, Liberia – December 6, 2024 – The Society of Family Physicians of Liberia (SOFPOL) has honored Dr. Rick Sacra with the Outstanding Leadership and Founders Award for his transformative contributions to family medicine in Liberia.

Dr. Sacra, a key figure in the establishment of Liberia’s Family Medicine Residency Program, was recognized for his visionary leadership and unwavering commitment to improving healthcare. The program, which he first envisioned in 2008, addresses critical gaps in Liberia’s health system by training skilled family physicians, particularly for underserved rural areas.

In his acceptance speech, Dr. Sacra reflected on the challenges of building the program, including disruptions caused by the Ebola crisis, and expressed gratitude for the collaborative efforts of colleagues such as Dr. David Okiro, Dr. Rogers, and the team at Last Mile Health. “When God puts a conviction in your heart, you must listen,” he said, emphasizing his dedication to family medicine as a cornerstone of Liberia’s healthcare future.

Dr. Okiro praised Dr. Sacra’s contributions, describing him as a mentor and visionary who remained committed to the program even after relocating to the United States. “Rick’s dedication goes beyond personal gain; it’s about a mission to serve Liberia’s people,” he said.

The ceremony also highlighted the continued growth of the Family Medicine Residency Program, which has produced a new generation of physicians committed to holistic, patient-centered care. Residents and graduates shared personal reflections on Dr. Sacra’s mentorship, describing him as both a professional guide and a father figure.

As the program continues to expand, Dr. Sacra reaffirmed his confidence in its future, noting ongoing efforts to secure government recognition and support for family medicine specialists.
