— Nimba Senator’s remains will tour Nimba for 3 days before being interred on Saturday
Liberians gathered in their thousands along the streets of Monrovia to pay their last respects to fallen Senator Prince Y. Johnson of Nimba County–as a convoy conveying his remains paraded up Tubman Boulevard to the Capitol, where some official rites were performed by the state.
The late Nimba Senator’s body was removed from the Samuel Straker Funeral Parlor in Sinkor and taken to the Capitol Building where it was laid in State.
The procession was led by Vice President Jeremiah Kpan Koung, House Speaker Richard Koon and Senate Pro-Tempore Nyonblee Karnga Lawrence, followed by members of both houses, as they paraded with the body of Senator Johnson to be laid in State at the Capitol Building.
At the Capitol, a brief ceremony was held, where the Vice President and members of the Legislature paid their tributes.
Senator Brown of Maryland County, on behalf of the Senate, described Senator Johnson as a committed person, who stood in defense of his people in Nimba County.
“Today is the day that brought sorrow and great reflection,” he said.
Reflecting on the many roles Senator Johnson played as a statesman, he said Senator Johnson served the Liberian Senate on several committees, beginning with the Committee on National Defense and Veteran Affairs, represented Liberia at the ECOWAS Parliament, where he served diligently.
He lastly served on the Committee on Internal Affairs, Governance and Reconciliation, where the local government bill was on the committee desk when he met his demise, Senator Brown had said.
The 55th Legislative Caucus of Nimba praised the Senator for standing his ground to stop the atrocities of the late President Samuel Kanyan Doe.
“Senator Johnson was not ambitious for state power or he would have declared himself as president when he toppled Samuel Doe on September 10, 1990,” they said.
The caucus promised to continue his legacy, which calls for educating Liberian children.
Vice President Jeremiah Koung recounted how Senator Johnson impacted his life politically to become who he is today.
He said he had no dream of becoming representative, but it was Senator Johnson who lifted his hand twice to win both 2011 and 2017 elections as representative and as Senator in 2020 and finally supported him to become Vice President of Liberia.
“It was Senator Johnson, who brought me here, thank you Senator,” he concluded.
The Senator’s remains were laid under a canopy, outside the Capitol Building, considering that the Rotunda of the Capitol was damaged badly by the recent fire.
Senator Johnson’s remains will be taken to Nimba today for another day of funeral procession, beginning with wake keeping in Ganta. On Thursday, his body will begin the tour of Nimba, beginning with a brief stop in Sanniquellie and another night of wake keeping in Karnplay.
On Friday, the body goes to Bahn City for viewing, followed by a night of wake keeping in Saclepea and on Saturday, the body will arrive or return to Ganta for state funeral and interment at his PYJ Polytechnic University’s Campus.
