…. Calls on President Boakai to “Exercise Decisive Leadership in impasse”

The Union of Liberian Associations in the Americas (ULAA), which is the umbrella organization for all Liberian organizations in the United States, Canada, Central and South America, wishes to express deep concerns over recent reports of tension and misunderstandings regarding the Supreme Court of Liberia’s ruling concerning the House of Representatives leadership saga.

ULAA is further appalled by reports of escalating violence and calls on all parties to exercise restraint. “We believe that our fragile democracy needs to be nurtured through wisdom, respect for all and peace. In light of these developments, ULAA welcomes the recent ruling of the Supreme Court of Liberia, which unequivocally illuminated the constitutional guardrails for conduct and we call on all parties to adhere to the courts order.”

The diaspora Liberian organization views the ruling as a beacon of hope for the rule of law in Liberia, reaffirming their collective commitment to democratic principles and the sanctity of Liberia’s legal institutions. ULAA furthermore, like to draw the attention of the entire government to this alarming situation.

“We urge the U.S. to consider imposing travel restrictions and sanctions on those individuals who bear significant responsibility for these violations of the rule of law, particularly in light of the troubling allegations surrounding a US$25,000 bribery scheme. Such measures would serve as a clear message that undermining democracy and engaging in corruption will not be tolerated. We call upon all members of the Legislature to respect the rule of law and abide by the Supreme Court’s ruling. It is imperative that our representatives uphold the democratic values we cherish and work collaboratively for the betterment of our nation.”

According to ULAA, at a time when Liberia is being heralded for its smooth transition from the previous administration, it is unfortunate that this saga is attempting to tarnish the progress made by the nation.

ULAA further added that Liberians in the US are weary of any reports that signal unrest emanating from their country. They call upon President Joseph Boakai to exercise decisive leadership in this matter and promote the rule of law.

“ULAA remains resolute and unwavering in its quest to uphold the rules of law and calls on all Liberians to stand together in honoring democracy, the rule of law, and the will of its people.”
