The University of Liberia Student Union (ULSU) ), has raised pressing concerns about challenges hindering academic and social progress at the state-run institution.
In a statement delivered by ULSU President Jacqueline Blio B. Tingban on Monday, January 13, the union cited financial corruption, credential falsification, inadequate classroom performance by lecturers, structural deficits, and administrative interference in student leadership as critical issues requiring urgent attention.
Speaking during a press conference, Madam Tingban called for decisive action to address these challenges, warning that a culture of inefficiency and corruption continues to undermine the university’s mission.
“The perpetrators of these sinister acts are determined to sustain a spoiled system that benefits them rather than the purpose of education,” Madam stressed.
She also highlighted the chronic underfunding of the university by successive governments, calling on President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr., to prioritize increased funding for Liberia’s premier academic institution.
“It is the responsibility of the Liberian government to fund the university to the fullest extent possible as described by its founding charter,” Tingban emphasized.
Despite these challenges, the ULSU President extended a welcome to Dr. Layli Maparyan, the 16th President of the University of Liberia.
Tingban expressed optimism about Dr. Maparyan’s leadership, describing her appointment as a “new dawn” for the institution.
Dr. Maparyan’s historic appointment comes at a pivotal time, and ULSU expressed hope that her wealth of experience and innovative vision will help tackle the institution’s challenges.
The union pledged its full support to her administration in fostering collaboration, inclusivity, and academic rigor.
She said: “ULSU stands ready to work with you in advancing the university’s mission and creating a culture of excellence.”
The student body also urged all stakeholders, including faculty, administration, and the government, to collaborate in addressing resource constraints, improving infrastructure, and enhancing the quality of education.
SUP Endorses ULSU Leadership
In a related development, the Vanguard Student Unification Party (SUP) has officially endorsed Jacqueline Blio B. Tingban as the new ULSU President.
In a statement, SUP announced the recall of its former Standard Bearer, Mary Kerkula, and expressed confidence in Tingban’s ability to lead.
“Comrade J. Blio B. Tingban is an ideological and disciplined patriot whose commitment to Massecracy is remarkable,” SUP declared, urging all party members to support her leadership.
Meanwhile, as the new semester begins, ULSU encourages students to actively participate in academic and social activities, emphasizing the importance of unity and collective action.
Tingban said the University of Liberia community is hopeful that Dr. Maparyan’s administration, coupled with ULSU’s advocacy, will usher in a new era of progress and transformation for the institution.
