MONROVIA – The Unity Party Montserrado Youth Congress, led by Chairman Sylvester Wonplue, has issued a strong statement expressing deep dissatisfaction with what it describes as the continued neglect and inadequate support for the youth by government officials. In a press release on October 31, 2024, Public Relations Officer Yusuf M. Konneh underscored the growing frustration within Montserrado County’s youth population, calling for meaningful actions to address their concerns.

According to the statement, the youth in Montserrado County represent a vital segment of Liberia’s population, serving as a cornerstone for the nation’s development. Yet, Unity Party’s Montserrado Youth Congress feels that their aspirations are being overlooked by those in power. “After a series of consultative meetings and robust engagements among our leadership, it has become increasingly clear that the aspirations and needs of our young people are not being prioritized,” Konneh said, citing job creation, access to scholarships, and youth participation in decision-making as key areas needing urgent attention.

The Unity Party Montserrado Youth Congress announced that it will only engage with ministers and officials who demonstrate a genuine commitment to youth development. The Congress made clear that government leaders must take practical steps to create job opportunities, facilitate access to education and scholarships, and open channels for youth involvement in decision-making processes.

The statement also emphasized the importance of treating young Liberians not as “statistics” but as vital contributors to society. Unity Party’s youth wing called on the government to take immediate actions that reflect the value and potential of the nation’s youth. “It is our collective responsibility to ensure that young people are not merely seen as statistics but are valued as vital contributors to our society,” the statement reads.

As a call to action, the Unity Party Montserrado Youth Congress expressed its readiness to collaborate with government officials who are committed to uplifting the youth. The Congress envisions a Liberia where young people play an active role in building a more inclusive and equitable society. In its closing remarks, the statement reiterated the Congress’s commitment to working with allies who share a vision for a brighter future for Liberia’s youth, declaring, “Together, we can build a more inclusive and equitable society where the voices of our young people are heard and respected.”
