MONROVIA – Ahead of today’s hearing of the Supreme Court of Liberia involving parties in the ongoing standoff at the House of Representatives, United States Ambassador, Mark Toner has sounded a warning for the respect for the ‘rule of Law’.
Speaking Monday, November 25, when he visited former Liberian President George Manneh Weah at his Rehab residence, Ambassador Toner stated that the United States government was closely monitoring events on Capitol Hill and is looking to see how Liberia’s political process plays out peacefully and with ‘respect for the rule of law’.
Ambassador Toner said that Liberia needs peace more than ever before and called on Liberian political leaders to show unity.
“The United States wants to see Liberia’s political process play out peacefully and with respect to the rule of law. Now more than ever, Liberia’s leaders past and present need to show unity.” Ambassador Mark Toner stated.
Meanwhile, the Chair of the Peacebuilding Commission’s (PBC), Permanent Representative of Sweden to the UN, Ms. Nicola Clase and team yesterday met with President George M. Weah to talk about issues unfolding in the country. It was a very important meeting with the rule of law being top of the discussion.
President Weah didn’t hide his position on the illegal actions unfolding at the grounds of the Capitol building with both the United States Ambassador and the United Nations delegation.
