The Velmer Group, a collective of women alumnae from the classes of 1967, 1968, 1969, and 1970 of Cuttington University, have reaffirmed their commitment to giving back by donating US$1,000 to the university. The donation was presented to the university’s president, Dr. Romelle Horton, during a brief ceremony at the Cuttington Graduate School in Congo Town, Monrovia.
The contribution symbolizes the group’s appreciation for the transformative education they received decades ago.
Speaking during the ceremony, Yei Wuor, Group Lead and a 1970 economics graduate, expressed pride in Cuttington University’s growth. “It brings me joy to see our alma mater at this level,” Wuor said. “From 1970 to 2024, Cuttington has evolved significantly, even establishing a graduate school. This is a testament to the resilience and leadership that have brought the school to this stage.”
As part of their efforts to honor their alma mater, the group also announced the creation of the Velmer Davis Okoru Awards, an annual prize of US$500 to be awarded to the top-performing female undergraduate students in economics. The award, starting in December 2024, is dedicated to the memory of their late classmate, Velmer Davis Okoru. The prize will recognize students who excel academically while demonstrating good character and integrity.
Mrs. Wuor, a member of the group, clarified the intent behind the initiative. “This is not a scholarship program but a way to celebrate academic excellence and reward exceptional achievements,” she said.
Mrs. Edith Ricks, a 1969 graduate, praised Cuttington University for its enduring legacy as a premier educational institution in Liberia. “Cuttington has always been one of the top universities in the country, and we are proud to be associated with it,” she said.
Other members of the group, including Martha Belleh Sendolo (Class of 1968) and Mildred Keller (Class of 1967), reminisced about their time at the university, emphasizing the strong bonds and cherished memories they built.
Cuttington’s President Dr. Romelle Horton, expressed heartfelt gratitude to the group, highlighting the importance of alumni contributions. “This token, though modest, is given with a full heart and carries blessings,” Horton said. “Giving back to society is one of the most meaningful legacies one can leave. It earns recognition and divine blessings that money cannot buy.”
The Velmer Group’s donation and the establishment of the annual award reflect the enduring influence of alumni on their alma mater, fostering a legacy of excellence, gratitude, and inspiration for future generations.
